I'm speaking at an assisted living senior citizens' residence. The area I want to visit is when we seem to be spent, and cannot see any more point to life, we can rely on God, who will provide us comfort, sustenance and purpose. In this case He can provide those even to seniors who think there isn't any more hope.

The lectionary all through this season of Pentacost speaks of eating and drinking, of hunger and thirst, of feasts. Here an angel come twice to give Elijah heavenly bread. Thinking about Elijah's despair as he lay down, asking to die; I wonder if he regretted his judgmental killing of the Baal prophets. Going into the wilderness, I think of Paul's Damascus walk--for Elijah, for any of us. Great deep sorrow often precedes our relinquishment of self to God. Then God's angels--of mercy, in many shapes and forms come to feed us, to bring us back to Life. I think of Jesus: "Tabitha, get up." And "give her something to eat." How have angels of mercy come to you? How have you been an angel to a prophet of God? When does Christ in us call others to life? --
A lot of contributers--pastors must be on vacation this month. Usually there is a lot of conversation late in the week around the readings.

There is so little posted that I will share a few thoughts I have about this text. We could focus on the exhilaration of success followed by the let down when things aren't what they seem. How often has victory tasted sour? When our success is tattered and shabby and lacking in endurance depression sets in.
That's when we have to rely on God to get us focused on a more meaningful path for our life. Even with the eucharistic overtones in this text we find that sustenance is not enough. We need a goal, a purpose, a mission that sustenance nourishes in us to move forward following God's guidance for our lives.
Just some random thoughts as I sit down to write.
